Canada wins 2 speed skating silvers

Canadian speed skaters struck for two silver medals in the team pursuit Thursday at the Torino Olympic Winter Games.

Canada's men's pursuit squad, featuring Calgary's Arne Dankers of Calgary, Steven Elm of Red Deer, Alta., and Regina's Justin Warsylewicz, lost the gold-medal final of the new Olympic event to host Italy.

"Just to be here was something special for our team," Dankers said.


Canada set the world record of 3:39.69 last November yet the Italians won handily, taking the eight-lap race in three minutes and 44.46 seconds. Canada's skaters clocked 3:47.28 but, according to Dankers, "we exceeded all our expectations."

The trio of Kristina Groves of Ottawa, Winnipeg's Clara Hughes and Christine Nesbitt of London, Ont., also settled for silver in the women's final against favoured Germany.


The world champion Germans completed six laps in 3:01.25 to finish more than a full second faster than Canada (3:02.91).

"We did the best that we could," Hughes said. "That's the best race we've ever done together.

"Our goal was to get to the gold-medal final. And then, fight it out."

Groves and Hughes combined with Winnipeg's Cindy Klassen to outfox Japan by 3.82 seconds in the semifinals, but Klassen wound up replaced by Nesbitt in the final.

"Anybody could have skated the final," Klassen noted. "I have a lot of racing at these Games, so that's why I didn't race the last one."

Buttle wins figure skating bronze

Canadian Jeff Buttle won the bronze medal in men's figure skating with a solid free skate Thursday.

Russian Evgeny Plushenko won the gold medal while Stephane Lambiel of Switzerland won the silver. Buttle had his best free skate of the season. He nailed his first two jumps and executed a good three-jump combination, including a triple Lutz. He also nailed his final jump, a triple Lutz. But the skater downgraded a triple loop to a double, leaving some points on the table. Most significantly, he fell on his quadruple jump, one he has struggled with all season. Buttle skated third from last and waited with baited breath as the final two skaters performed.

"Oh, my God, it's nuts," Buttle said as soon as he realized he'd made the podium. "It hasn't sunk in. It's nuts. This is huge for me."

Plushenko was heavily favoured to win gold. He has dominated men's figure skating in recent years. Plushenko, the three-time world champion, took few chances but managed a personal best and won the fifth straight gold medal for Russian/Soviet men.

Canadian slider wins bronze

Canadian slider Mellisa Hollingsworth-Richards won the bronze medal in the women's skeleton Thursday.
Swiss slider Maya Pedersen won the gold medal and Briton Shelley Rudman claimed the silver. Hollingsworth-Richards finished with a combined time of two minutes and 1.41 seconds, 1.58 seconds slower than the winner.

She was in third place with two sliders remaining. She worried that German Diana Sartor, who finished ahead of her in the first run, would knock her off the medal podium. But Sartor had a weak run and allowed the Canadian to claim bronze.

"In two minutes it went from heartbreak to 'Oh my goodness, I'm going to have to wait for four more years' to 'Thank God,'" said Hollingsworth-Richards.

"That's the thing about sport. You're never, ever wanting anybody to make mistakes to give you an advantage. Maybe that's where luck comes in."


Pederson was a medal favourite heading into the Games. She finished fifth at the 2002 Salt Lake City Games. She skipped the 2003-04 World Cup season because she was pregnant. But after giving birth to her daughter, she came back stronger than ever. Her gold medal was the first of this Games for Switzerland.

Canadian men too strong for Germany

Any thought of a German upset was quickly put to rest by Canada in men's hockey Thursday at Palasport Olimpico. Looking more relaxed than their game against the Italians on Wednesday, the Canadians beat Germany 5-1 to remain undefeated in the preliminary round.

It was expected that the pesky Germans, renowned for their tight-checking style, would keep the game close considering they nearly upset Canada four years ago at the Salt Lake City Olympics in Provo, Utah. However, Canada was able to solve Germany's 1-4 defence that gave the Czech Republic team so many problems Wednesday. With this strategy, the Germans employ one forechecker and four defenders across their own blue-line, making penetration by the opposing team difficult. Simon Gagne led Canada with one goal and an assist.

The game turned in Canada's favour early and in an unusual way. Canadian goaltender Roberto Luongo came out of his net to clear the puck, but forward Lasse Kopitz intercepted his attempt. With an apparent open net, a sliding Adam Foote, who covered for Luongo on the play, robbed the German. On the ensuing rush, defencemen Wade Redden converted a 2-on-1 with Gagne as he beat Germany's goalie Thomas Greiss at 4:52 of the first period to give Canada a 1-0 lead.

Predictably, the German's style of play caused them to take a number of penalties but Canada was only able to score one power-play goal on eight chances. That goal came when Joe Sakic banged home a rebound at 7:29 of the first after Griess stopped Rick Nash's initial shot. Sakic's goal gave Canada a 2-0 edge. Unlike their game against Italy, the Canadian's power play struggled as shots from the point missed the German net several times. Dany Heatley and Shane Doan scored Canada's other goals while Christian Ehrhoff had Germany's lone tally.

Canada's next game is Saturday against Switzerland.

Kleibrink splits two

Canadian curler Shannon Kleibrink beat Norway in the evening draw to earn a split in two matches at the Torino Olympics on Thursday.

Kleibrink stole three in the eighth end and added a pair in the ninth to tip the balance in what had been a seesaw affair. Norway got a pair back in the last end to make the final 10-8. Both Kleibrink and Dordi Nordby of Norway are 3-2 in the standings.

In action for the first time in two days, Kleibrink dropped a 6-5 decision to Switzerland's Mirjam Ott in the morning draw.
A silver medallist at the 2002 Olympics (as third for Luzia Ebnother), Ott crushed Denmark 10-2 in evening play. Like Ott, Anette Norberg of Sweden won twice on Thursday. After doubling Italy 8-4 in the morning, Norberg again bested Cassie Johnson of the U.S., 5-4 in evening play. Norberg had beaten Johnson last March in the final of the world championship in Paisley, Scotland. Johnson left her last rock short in the 11th end to give Norberg the win on Thursday. The U.S. are 1-4 and will need to win their last four matches in the Olympic round-robin to have a chance at the medal round. Switzerland and Sweden each have a 4-1 record to top the standings. Great Britain (3-1) are next after beating Russia 10-4 in the morning, followed by Canada and Norway.

In the morning match, Ott broke a 5-5 tie in the 10th end by scoring one to hand Kleibrink her second loss of the tournament. Kleibrink, who curls out of Calgary, was the first on the board when she scored one in the second end. Ott scored three in the fourth, but Kleibrink made a pretty shot to edge the Swiss skip's stone out of the way to score a deuce in the fifth to tie the game. Kleibrink stole one in the seventh, but Ott scored two in the eighth. The Canadian again tied the score in the ninth with a single, but Ott had an open look at the button with her final rock in the tenth to win the draw.

Gushue drops Trulsen for the men

Canada's Brad Gushue upped his Olympic curling record to 4-1 Thursday with a 6-5 win over defending men's gold medallist Paal Trulsen of Norway.
Trulsen fell to 2-3 on the tournament after his final rock of the 10th end rubbed on another stone, leaving Gushue's shot stone as the decisive point.

Gushue opened the scoring with two points in the first end and one in the second before Trulsen got one back in the third. The Norwegian then stole one in each of the next two ends to even the game, 3-3. Gushue reclaimed the lead in the seventh, drawing to the four-foot for one, before Trulsen gave up a steal in the eighth to hand Gushue a lead of two. Trulsen again squared the game in the ninth before Gushue picked up the winning point in the tenth via Trulsen's missed shot.

In other men's action on Thursday afternoon, David Murdoch of Great Britain kept pace with Gushue atop the standings with a 7-6 win over Germany's Andy Kapp, who fell to 1-3. Switzerland's Ralph Stoeckli evened his record at 2-2 with a 9-7 win over Sean Becker of New Zealand, who fell to 0-5. Pete Fenson of the United States stunned Sweden's Peja Lindholm by stealing two in both the ninth and tenth ends for a 10-6 win. Both skips are now 2-2.

Gushue returns to the ice on Friday evening for a game against Finland's Markku Uusipaavalniemi, who was idle on Thursday afternoon and stands at 2-2.

Canadian DQ'd in snowboard semi

Canadian Jasey Jay Anderson was disqualified from his semifinal heat Thursday as snowboard cross made its Olympic debut in Turin, Italy. Anderson, from Mont-Tremblant, Que., got tangled up with Spain's Jordi Font near the middle of the course, with both riders going down. While Radoslav Zidek of Slovakia cruised to the finish line in first, Anderson managed to get up and cross the line in second. But after judges reviewed the replay, Anderson was disqualified.

In snowboard cross, riders aren't allowed to make aggressive body contact but they are permitted to protect their personal space, which leads to jostling in many races.

Riders race side by side in groups of four in a number of elimination heats, with the top two advancing to the next round. Eventually four riders remain for the four-athlete final. Anderson regrouped from his disqualification in the semifinals to win the "small final" and earn the fifth position.

Anderson's mishap in the semis was part of a disappointing day for Canadians in the snowboard cross. Drew Nielson of North Vancouver, B.C., a medal favourite who had the fastest time in qualifying, finished third in his heat in the round of 32, failing to advance to the quarter-finals. Tom Velicek of Vernon, B.C., also did not make the quarters. Neilson got tripped up by Rafal Skarbek-Malczewski of Poland, who slipped and fell into the netting. Neilson made it down the course but was left shaking his head at the unpredictable nature of his sport.

Snowboard cross, formerly known as boardercross, is a big twist on its cousin, the parallel giant slalom. Fast reflexes, tight carves and a kamikaze psyche are keys to advancement. The Olympic course, designed by Canadian Jeff Ihaksi, is land-mined with elements called whoops, waves, banks, kickers and spines. These features test the riders' momentum and balance.

Swiss stun Czechs in men's hockey

The biggest shocker of the day came when Switzerland beat the Czech Republic 3-2 Thursday morning to pull off the first big upset of the men's Olympic hockey tournament.

Led by the brilliant goaltending of David Aebischer, Switzerland won its biggest game in the nation's hockey history. Mark Streit scored the winning goal on the power play at 6:42 of the third period. The goal came after Czech forward Vaclav Prospal took an ill-timed high-sticking penalty.

The key for the Swiss team was holding off an offensive onslaught by the Czechs in the second period. Aebischer made 20 saves including six against Jaromir Jagr. Playing with only two NHL players, the Swiss were penalized six of the eight infractions in the second and had to withstand a 5-on-3 penalty for nearly two minutes. Switzerland killed off the final seven minutes to take a 2-1 lead into the third period.

Aebischer, who was the clearly the best player on either side, was mobbed by his teammates after the game. The Czechs were playing without goaltender Dominik Hasek, who injured his left hamstring against Germany Wednesday. The 41-year-old Hasek will know Thursday whether his hamstring is torn as he is scheduled to have an MRI exam in the Olympic Village. (update:The trainer for the Czech Republic men's hockey team thinks Dominik Hasek is more likely to bow out of the Olympics than risk further injury).In his place, Tomas Vakoun made 16 saves but didn't look as strong as he did against Germany in the Czech's 4-1 win.

With Switzerland leading 2-1, Marek Zidlicky tied the game for the Czech Republic one minute into the third period. It was Zidlicky's first goal of the tournament. Jagr scored the Czech's first goal, but was robbed by Aebischer on several chances. During one stretch in the second, Aebischer dove across his crease to make a great pad save on the NHL's leading scorer. Thomas Ziegler gave Switzerland a 1-0 lead in the first period and Thierry Paterlini answered Jagr's goal in the second with a short-handed goal at 9:44.

Before the hockey tournament began, Switzerland players felt their team could upset one of the Olympic elite, but even the most ardent of them couldn't envision beating the defending world champions.

Swiss player Mark Streit provided the understatement of the day,

"I think it's by far the biggest win in Swiss hockey – since I've been playing. Even in history, it's kind of a miracle."

Switzerland plays Canada on Saturday.

U.S avoids disaster by tying Latvia

Jordan Leopold saved the United States from a potentially embarrassing loss in men's hockey action at the Torino Olympics on Wednesday. The Calgary Flames defenceman beat former NHL goaltender Arturs Irbe early in the third period with a hard shot just inside the Latvian blue-line as the teams skated to a 3-3 tie at the Palasport Olimpico. Latvia, which failed to qualify for the Salt Lake Games four years ago, had a chance to bury the 2002 silver medallists but couldn't find the net on the power play.

"We were not expected to win or even get the tie," said Irbe, who made 18 of his 39 saves in the third period. "We were big-time underdogs in this game in everybody's eyes except our own people.

Cherry had a message for coach Melody Davidson and the Canadian Olympic women's hockey team:

Stop running up the score in Turin, Italy, or else.

"If you keep it up, you're committing suicide and they'll throw [women's hockey out of the Winter Games after Vancouver in 2010]," the Hockey Night in Canada personality said on Wednesday night, referring to the International Olympic Committee.


Canada has outscored the opposition 36-1 during its three preliminary-round games, including a 16-0 thrashing of Italy to open the tournament on Saturday. The man who's mouth is at times as loud as his jackets, echoed with his comment the ones by American defensemen Angela Ruggiero.

"I'm upset that Canada has been running up the score, especially against the host nation," Ruggiero told Sports Illustrated's website on Monday.

"There was no need for that. They're trying to pad their stats ... Canada is running up the score for whatever reasons – personal, short-term."

To Cherry and the critics who have said the Canadian women lack class, these girls went to Turin to play their best, and that's what there doing. It's not their fault the rest of the world hasn't woken up to the huge success of womens hockey.

T don't agree with Cherry who believes the sport could receive the same treatment in the Olympics as baseball and softball. Last week, the IOC – which is comprised of 125 members, of which 60 are European – voted against reinstating both sports for the 2012 London Games at their annual meeting in Turin.

"They don't play [baseball and softball] in Europe, [so the IOC] had it thrown out," Cherry said. "If you beat all those European [hockey] teams [by lopsided scores] and make a mockery of the hosts [they'll throw it out]."

They play hockey in Europe, just not at a competitive level, yet. Women's hockey is about the same level as the men's game was in the fifties, with only a couple of countries dominating. Noboby said get rid of the game then. Some developement money and better coaches, and the game will improve.

And finally the dumbest attempt at a defense...

Goes to Nikolai Durmanov, head of the Russian Anti-Doping Committee When asked about Russian biathlete Olga Pyleva positive test for a banned substance, Durmanov blamed Pyleva's positive test on a doctor who treated her for an ankle injury in January. According to Durmanov, the doctor gave Pyleva an over-the-counter medication that did not list carphedon as one of its ingredients.

"This was 100 per cent the physician's mistake," Durmanov said.

The silver medallist in Monday's 15-kilometre race, had been stripped of her medal and thrown out of the Torino Olympics after two doping tests came back positive. CBC News has learned Pyleva tested positive for the stimulant carphedon. Pyleva, 30, is the first athlete to fail a drug test at these Winter Games.

Carphedon was developed in Russia and used to treat a brain disorder that causes dementia and seizures. The drug can also be used to increase physical stamina and provide improved tolerance to cold. As a result, it appears on many of the lists of banned substances made by the IOC.

Short-track bronze for Canada


Canadian Anouk Leblanc-Boucher won the bronze medal in the women's 500-metre short-track race.

China's Wang Meng won the gold medal, while Bulgarian Evgenia Radanova captured the silver. China's Fu Tianyu finished fourth by a tiny margin, but was disqualified for cross-drafting.

Leblanc-Boucher, 21, hails from Prevost, Que. She is competing in her frist Olympics. She broke her ankle while training in November 2001 and a screw was inserted during surgery. She went on to clinch the world junior title in the 500 in 2004. She has been strong ever since, and is now ranked fifth overall in this event. Wang, a rising star in the sport, is considered a successor to the legendary Yang Yang (A). Wang has won one gold and one silver medal in this event at world championships. She won four gold medals in the 2005-2006 World Cup season, and is ranked first in the world in this event.

Radanova has competed in three Olympics, winning silver at the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics. She has won one gold medal and two silvers at world championships. She won two silver medals and one bronze in the 2005-2006 World Cup season, and is ranked second in the world in this event.

It seemed all Canada needed to find its game was a scare by a motivated Italian team Wednesday morning at Palasport Olimpico arena. Jarome Iginla scored two power-play goals to lead Canada to a 7-2 win over Italy as the team opened defence of its Olympic gold medal.


The Canadians looked sluggish and confused early as they missed passes and good scoring opportunities. The result was only a 1-0 lead at the end of the first period on Iginla's goal. He took a perfect pass from Todd Bertuzzi and then one-timed a shot from the slot to beat Italian goaltender Jason Muzzatti at 5:33.

Italy scored the tying goal on the power-play just 43 seconds into the second period that shocked Canada and prompted the home crowd into loud chants of "Italia, Italia," after Giulio Scandella directed a shot to the Canadian net that beat goalie Martin Brodeur. The mometum didn't last as Dany Heatley scored a power-play goal to give Canada a 2-1 lead a 1:12 later. Heatley's goal seemed to settle the Canadians en route to five unanswered goals. Winger Todd Bertuzzi, who had two assists in the game, said his Canadian team wasn't unnerved by the Italian goal.

"Not at all, not with the amount of character we have," Bertuzzi told CBC Sports.

"We know what we have to do, we came out strong in the second period, we kept building and building, our passes got better and we started scoring goals."

Iginla's second goal with the man advantage gave Canada all the insurance it would need. He took a nifty cross-ice pass from Joe Sakic and wristed a shot to the short side past Italian goaltender Jason Muzzatti at 6:04.

While motivated by the crowd, the Italians were undisciplined as Canada's speed produced three goals on the eight chances on the power play. Canadian coach Pat Quinn's decision to put Iginla, Bertuzzi and captain Sakic paid off in this game as the three combined for five points.

"We all play similar roles on the power play," said Bertuzzi. "Me and Jarome are better suited for around the net and in the corner. It was pretty easy, especially [playing with] Jarome and I tried to get him the puck in the slot and worked off Joe."

Shane Doan, Brad Richards, Martin St. Louis and Joe Thornton scored Canada's other goals, while forward John Parco tallied for Italy's second goal. Despite Canada's immense advantage in talent and 50-20 edge in shots, Italy worked hard and Muzzatti made several key saves.

The Italians are making only their third Olympic appearance in hockey. They participated in the 1948 and 1956 Winter Games. Italy does have some players with limited NHL experience. Muzzatti, a former Calgary Flames first-round pick, had his only NHL shutout in 1996 when he stopped all 40 shots to lead the Hartford Whalers to a 1-0 win over a young Martin Brodeur and the hometown New Jersey Devils.

"It was a tremdous challenge for us," said Muzzatti, who gained a lot of respect from the Canadian team. "My boys worked so hard to keep it at [7-2]. There's a lot of people at home saying prayers in Toronto and I think they helped me keep it to seven."

The win gives Canada its 91st Olympic victory, the most by any coutnry. Canada's next game is Thursday against Germany.

Canada's Brad Gushue wasn't going to let a freak occurrence break his concentration or slow him down in the men's curling competition at the Torino Games. Gushue, who curls out of St. John's, skipped his Canadian rink to a 9-5 victory in nine ends over David Murdoch and Great Britain Wednesday in Pinerolo, approximately 50 kilometres from Turin, Italy.

After Gushue posted back-to-back steals in the first two ends, Murdoch drew to the button to score a deuce in the third to knot the score at 2-2. Gushue, holding last-rock advantage for the first time in the contest, capitalized by scoring three in the fourth end to take a 5-2 lead. Murdoch scored one in the next end to make it a 5-3 contest. Gushue drew to the button to score one in the sixth end and then stole a single in the seventh to jump out 6-3. Murdoch made it a two-point contest when he scored a pair in the eighth end, but Gushue put the game away in the ninth with a double takeout to score two.

Swiss skip Ralph Stoeckli provided stiffer opposition in the second showdown, but Gushue scored singles over five consecutive ends to prevail 7-5

Gushue, a two-time world junior champion who curls out of St. John's, showed a deft touch by drawing against three for one in the first end. But Stoeckli tied 1-1 on an open draw in the second, then stole three in third when Gushue's last shot picked before reaching the house. After Gushue drew to the back of the four-foot in the fourth, he earned a steal of one on Stoeckli's failed tap in the fifth. Gushue pulled even in the sixth and regained the lead in the seventh when Stoeckli's hit-and-roll stopped a hair short of the button, prompting a measurement won by Canada. Stoeckli continued to unravel in the eighth, wrecking on a guard to give Gushue yet another steal of one, but he regrouped to to count one on a precarious rub to cut it to 6-5 through nine. Gushue then drew to the four-foot to clinch it in the 10th.

2005 Productions Shot Around Toronto

2005 was a better year for film production in the GTA, 39 features compared to 30 in 2004 but it is a far cry from the 47 shot back in 2001. The following response to an article posted December 11, 2003 in the Toronto Star echoes the oppinions of many who work in the industry.

...The sad part is that the Toronto film industry has long been overlooked here, treated as a cash cow but little else. At its peak, it generated almost $1 billion a year in business here. Yet it was going to be hurt by the Island airport expansion, which certainly would have earned less money for the people of this city. Now we have a shortage of quality studios that are needed to film the large-scale productions which we are clearly capable of
making here. There are an estimated 10,000 of us who have jobs directly related to the business of film and television productions here, and an estimated 30,000 more who are somehow involved in it. The business was down about 35 per cent here from 2002 to 2003.

The building of a new studio is scheduled to be started down on the lakeshore by summer of next year, but it could be to late to save the industry unless we get help from all levels of government in the form of bigger tax credits to lure the big American productions and the hault to the cuts to the Canadian Television fund. In 2003 the fund was cut by 25% in 2004 it was further slashed. Not surprisingly during this period we have seen a drastic decline in production of original Canadian one hour dramas from 12 in 1999 to just 2 today. Something has to be done or the only place to view Canadian productions will be in a history museum.

Silver and Tarnish For Canada On Day Four

Day 4

Canadian cross-country skiers Beckie Scott and Sara Renner won a silver medal in the women's team sprint Tuesday at the Torino Olympics.
. Renner was able to recover from a broken pole on the third lap of the six-lap race on the Pragelato Plan course. In only a few calm strides, she found a sympathetic Norwegian coach, who handed her a replacement for the snapped ski pole. In an interview with CBC Newsworld, Renner compared the loss of the pole to canoeing without a paddle.

"It's not the best thing to happen but at the same time you can't give up," said Renner.

Scott gained the few lost seconds on the following lap and the Canadian duo clung with the lead pack through to the final 1.1-kilometre loop. Then they stepped up the pace. In the final half-kilometre, Scott charged up a hill to take the lead over Finland and Sweden. But on the final descent it was a tight race to the line and Scott was unable to kick ahead of Sweden's Lina Andersson. Andersson and Anna Dahlberg of Sweden took gold. Canada, anchored by Scott, took second, while the Finnish team of Aino Kaisa Saarinen and Virpi Kuitunen took third.

"I said to Sara when we were finishing our warm-up today, 'We've come a long way baby,'" Scott, the 2002 Olympic pursuit champion, said after the race. "We've been around a long time.

"This might be one of the last sprint relays we ever do together. In a way to finish it with an Olympic medal it's, well I'm not going to say it's surreal. We promised each other we wouldn't get to get too fruity at the end of this."

Scott, a native of Vermilion, Alta., and Renner of Canmore Alta., have proven to be a successful twosome this season, having capped their sensational two-week World Cup run in Canada with a silver medal in the classical team sprint relay this December in Canmore. Renner said the medal makes up for some frustrating seasons.

"We have taken the school of hard-knocks for a while," she said. "This is something that is great, we can enjoy it together. We have been medal contenders in this event and to actually do it at the Olympic Games is something that in 20 years we can have a reunion and reminisce. We can share it with each other."

This victory comes a day after Scott's disappointing sixth-place finish in the women's 15-km pursuit. As the defending Olympic pursuit champion, she was a medal favourite. The team sprint is a relay race where one skier does a 1.1-kilometre loop, then tags their partner, who races the same loop. They repeat the process three times. This year is the debut of the team sprint discipline at the Olympics.

It's Canada's third medal of the Winter Games. Freestyle skier Jennifer Heil won gold in moguls on Saturday, while speed skater Cindy Klassen glided to bronze in the women's 3,000-metres on Sunday.

Canada's hockey women dispatch competition Tu 'Swede'

Gillian Apps made sure the Canadian women's hockey team wouldn't slow down despite playing against tougher competition. Apps scored a hat trick in leading Canada to an 8-1 win over the Swedes at the Palasport Olimpico arena.

After routing Italy and Russia by a combined 28-0 in its first two games, talk of a close game seemed evident as Sweden's recent performances against Canada suggested the Scandinavian nation would be improved. Sweden coaches decided to save Kim Martin, one of the best women goaltenders, for a likely semifinal game against the United States. However, it's difficult to imagine her handling the Canadian onslaught better than Cecilia Andersson. The Swedes were simply unable to contain the dominant line of Apps, Hayley Wickenheiser and Cherie Piper. The three Canadians have combined for 33 points in the tournament, including 10 in this game.

"This is a pretty powerful line," Wickenheiser told CBC Sports. "We just complement each other's strengths. (Gillian) is a big-body presence and creates a lot of space for Piper and I to make plays. I think we have good chemistry right now."

With Canada leading 3-0 in the second, Apps scored her third goal of the game after taking a beautiful pass from Wickenheiser in the slot and then beat Andersson at 10:58. Apps scored her second goal earlier in the period when she banked in a rebound on the power play at 3:53 to give Canada a three-goal lead. Despite their dominance, the Canadian women had trouble staying out of the penalty box. After Danielle Goyette put Canada up 5-0 in the second, Swedish forward Ylva Lindberg deflected a shot past Canadian goalie Kim St. Pierre. It was the only positive moment Sweden would have in the game. Katie Weatherston, Jennifer Botterill and Goyette, who tallied two goals, rounded out the scoring for Canada. Apps and Wickenheiser scored Canada's first two goals in the opening period.

Canada's dominance started early and didn't allow a shot on net until Sweden was on the power play with just over six minutes remaining in the first period. The Canadians also killed a partial 5-on-3 penalty. Sweden did come close to scoring with only six seconds left after Maria Rooth's slapshot sailed over the shoulder of Canadian goalie Kim St. Pierre but hit the post. Canada finished the round robin play a perfect 3-0 and outscored its three opponents 36-1.

Next up for Canada is a semifinal matchup against Finland. The Finns put up a good fight, but fell 7-3 to the Americans on Tuesday. The United States faces Sweden in the other semi.

"We are prepared [for the medal round]," said Wickenheiser. "We've worked a lot on the strengths and weaknesses of all the teams including ourselves. We faced a lot of penalty kills today, which was good for us."


Canada's Shannon Kleibrink atoned for Monday's setback by winning not once, but twice on Tuesday at the Torino Olympic Winter Games. Kleibrink (2-1) required only eight ends to knock off Cassie Johnson of the United States 11-5, then counted one on last rock to nip Russia's Ludmila Privivkova 6-5 at Pinerolo, approximately 50 kilometres from Turin.

Kleibrink, who curls out of Calgary, is competing in her first Olympics, but ranks second to Canadian champion Jennifer Jones on the Women's World Curling Tour money list. Privivkova is tied for 41st.

Leading 2-1 in the sixth, Privivkova rubbed a guard and Kleibrink seized the opportunity with an open draw for two. Privivkova drew for one in the seventh to pull even, but Kleibrink countered for two on a draw to the four-foot to go up 5-3. Privivkova, only 20 years old but a fierce competitor, refused to fold, forcing Kleibrink to jam before taking out a Canadian stone to count two. With Privivkova lying two deep in the 10th, Kleibrink calmly drew to the four-foot for the winning point.

Against the U.S., Kleibrink tallied five in the first and three in the sixth to put the game out of reach.

"We got a little lucky in the first end and it was difficult for them to come back from there," she said.

Alternate Sandra Jenkins even saw some action against the Americans, taking over for second Amy Nixon in the seventh.

Gushue draws short in extra end


Brad Gushue faced a stern test Tuesday in three-time world champion Peja Lindholm and failed as Sweden rallied for an 8-7 win in an extra end Tuesday at the Torino Olympic Winter Games.

Lindholm counted a steal of one in the 11th when Gushue's draw to the button on last rock caught some debris and curled left. Lindholm (3-0), known for making thorough reads and precision shots, is one of curling's more stylish skips, and competing at Turin with a new hairdo (slicked back in a pony tail) and a new name (formerly Peter).

Gushue (1-1), who curls out of St. John's, debuted Monday with a 10-5 victory over Germany. Gushue, winner of world junior titles in 1998 and 2001 but a first-time Olympian, wisely recruited leather-lunged legend Russ Howard to curl second and call the shots. But the two-time Canadian and world champ (1987, 1993), who relocated from Ontario to New Brunswick in 1998, struggled versus the Swedes - as did Gushue at times.

Trailing 5-4 in the ninth end, Gushue took advantage of a critical mishit by Lindholm to count three on a draw to the button. But in the 10th, Gushue's final rock chipped off a Swedish stone, permitting Lindholm to draw for two and force an extra end. Gushue picked up one on last rock in the opening end, but Lindholm answered back with two in the second. Fortunately for Gushue, a third rock was ruled out on a measurement and he quickly capitalized, tying it 2-2 on a draw to the back of the four-foot in the third. Lindholm responded by drawing to the button with Canada lying three in the fourth, but Gushue again pulled even in the fifth. When Swedish third Tomas Nordin's fortuitous double-peel cleared the house of three Canadian stones, Lindholm tapped back for one to lead 4-3 through six. Gushue finally found himself in position to gamble for multiple points in the seventh, but managed only one to tie it at 4-4. Lindholm immediately tapped back to regain the lead in the eighth before erring in the ninth.

Canadian luge athlete crashes

Canadian athlete Meaghan Simister sustained minor injuries Tuesday in yet another crash on the Torino Olympic luge track. The accident happened during the third of four runs in the women's luge event. Simister, 19, went too high into one of the corners near the end of the course. She was knocked off her sled and continued to slide upright, without her sled for a few seconds before stopping.

Track personnel placed the Calgarian on a stretcher and she was taken to a medical facility for evaluation. Canadian luge spokesman Chris Dornan said doctors found bruises but no breaks. Simister was able to get up and walk around the medical room during the observation.

The women's luge competition, which began Monday, was marred by many crashes. The most frightening involved American Samantha Retrosi, who was carried off on a stretcher and taken away in an ambulance after losing control of her sled during her second run. Restrosi appeared to be unconscious as she slid underneath her sled through two curves of the track. The 20-year-old suffered a concussion and spent the night in hospital for observation.

A handful of other racers crashed out of the event including Italian Anastasia Oberstolz-Antonova and Marketa Jeriova of the Czech Republic. Others racers had near-disasters, including Canadian Alex Gough. Gough hurt her ankle during a shaky run in which she nearly came off her sled. She returned to compete Tuesday.

The Olympic track in Cesana, Italy, was modified last year after a rash of crashes by inexperienced sliders at a test event.

From the What the what the hell are you talking about? file. US hockey player Angela Ruggiero has stated that she feels Canada should tone it down.
In their first matchup of the Winter Games, Canada battered the Italian women 16-0. Not more than 24 hours later, they put 12 pucks past the Russians.

Some critics have said the Canadian women lack class, while others hold the view that the defending Olympic champions went to Turin, Italy, to play their best, and that's just what they'll do. United States defenceman and three-time Olympian Angela Ruggiero says Team Canada should have toned down their game against Italy.

"I'm upset that Canada has been running up the score, especially against the host nation," Ruggiero told Sports Illustrated's website on Monday. "There was no need for that. They're trying to pad their stats ... Canada is running up the score for whatever reasons – personal, short-term."

Canada outscored its opposition 36-1 in three games as of today, while the rival Americans have only outscored their opponents 11-0 in two games.

In this tournament, tiebreakers are decided first by the deadlocked teams' record against each other and then by goal differential. That differential can determine which team has home-ice advantage in the medal round. Ruggiero add more fuel by saying,

"It does hurt our sport when one team is so dominant," said the 26-year-old Ruggiero, regarded as one of the world's top blue-liners. "Beating Russia 12-0 after the Italy game, that doesn't help. If Italy had any hopes, or if their federation was thinking of helping women's hockey, well, this probably shattered them after the first game.

"They'll say, 'How are we ever going to beat those guys?' If you don't have a shot of ever getting there, why not invest in another sport?"

Despite the widespread criticism, Team Canada head coach Melody Davidson says they have to play their best no matter the circumstances.

"Regardless of the score, this is the Olympics," Davidson said after Sunday's win. "These girls have worked hard to be here and we would take things away from our team, our opponents and everybody involved if we didn't compete as hard as we could, and if we didn't do everything we could to put us where we want to be."

The Americans don't seem to complain when the U.S Basketball 'Superstars' at the Summer Games beat up on Angola by fifty points. so what is the difference here? It's time for the Americans to shut up and prepare for the evevitable Gold Medal showdown with the Canadians and hope the Canadians let up just for a second if they hope to stand a chance.

King of Vegas "Old School Rules"

Spike TV’s KING OF VEGAS, is a new reality TV show that debued on January 17. Players must not only master poker but a full spectrum of casino games. KING OF VEGAS will feature gamblers who will compete in a ‘decathlon of gambling’ for a $1 million cash prize and be crowned the world’s greatest gambler.

The program is co-hosted by Max Kellerman (from ESPN and Fox Sports) and Wayne Allyn Root, a prominent handicapper. During the competition the twelve players will compete against each other in varies casino games. Blackjack, baccarat, roulette, craps, Pai Gow, Caribbean Stud and horse racing are only some of the components of gambling that will be used to help to determine who is the "King Of Vegas".

One of my favourite players is Jerry Goldgerg, at an 83 year old retiree from Las Vegas. This guy is the ultimate definition of "old school". according to his biohe list 'gambling' as his only occupation. He first bet on a baseball game back in the 1930's!

Forsyth Crashes, Olympic's Over


Canadian skier Allison Forsyth suffered a torn knee ligament in a crash during Monday's Olympic downhill training runs at San Sicario, Italy. Forsyth, from Nanaimo, B.C., lost control of her left ski and grabbed her left knee as she skidded across the course into the protective fencing.

Canadian officials told CBC Sports that she tore an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), a potentially career-threatening injury that takes upward of eight months to fully recover from. Forsyth, 27, was taken down the hill on a toboggan and later airlifted by helicopter to a hospital in nearby Sestriere, where an MRI confirmed the injury. She is expected to return to Canada for surgery.

"It's the Olympics," Canadian skier Emily Brydon said. "People are trying to take more chances."


Defending champion Carole Montillet-Carles of France and American contender Lindsey Kildow sustained injuries in crashes too. A fourth skier, Austrian Elisabeth Goergl, also wiped out but was unhurt.

"There's just a lot of rolls, anything can happen," American skier Julia Mancuso said of the Fraiteve course, which officials re-designed because skiers complained it wasn't challenging enough.

"You can come off a jump, catch an edge and be a little unlucky."


Forsyth, a veteran of the Canadian alpine team, is a slalom specialist, but chose to compete in the Olympic downhill as well. She won a bronze medal in the giant slalom at the 2003 world championships.

Montillet-Carles, 32, crashed following a jump. She smashed into the fencing, landed on her back and slammed head-first into the snow. Details of her condition were not immediately available, but she appeared conscious when transported to the clinic located at the athletes' village in Sestriere.

Kildow, 21, was the eighth skier to follow Montillet-Carles and lost control as she turned around a gate on a flat stretch. When Kildow's left ski slid out, her right knee buckled and she went airborne for 15 feet before landing hard on her back and slamming her head. Writhing in pain as medical personnel rushed to her aid, she later was flown by helicopter to a hospital in Turin, where U.S. Alpine physician revealed she suffered a severely bruised left hip.

"She has no other significant injuries and has not ruled out competing in these Games," he said. I've known her for 10 years, and she's a very tough young lady."


Kleibrink falls to Norberg

Anette Norberg of Sweden defeated Canada's Shannon Kleibrink 7-5 Monday afternoon in the first draw of the women's curling tournament at the Torino Olympics. Norberg, the reigning world champion, broke a 4-4 tie in the eighth end by drawing for two with the hammer.

Kleibrink got one back in the ninth, nailing a hit-and-stick with the final rock to cut Norberg's lead to 6-5. But Kleibrink surrendered the hammer and couldn't set up a steal in the tenth. With her final shot of the match, Kleibrink came up short on an attempt to freeze her stone against Norberg's near the bottom of the house. That gave Norberg another point and made the Swede's last rock unnecessary.

Women's play resumes with two draws on Tuesday. Canada will take on the U.S. in the morning and Russia in the evening.

The Good News of the Day:Gushue Sweeps Germany Under the Rug


Brad Gushue of St. John's began his quest for Canada's first Olympic gold medal in men's curling with a 10-5 win in nine ends over Germany's Andy Kapp on Monday evening.

Gushue's rink, which has Russ Howard throwing second stones, got off to a shaky start, giving up a steal of two in the first end. The teams then traded two-point ends before Gushue responded with three points in the fourth to take a 5-4 lead. Gushue stole one in each of the next three ends before Kapp got a point back in the seventh to cut Gushue's lead to 8-5. After Gushue scored two in the ninth, Kapp, who curled 50 per cent to Gushue's 81 per cent, conceded the match. Monday's match was the first of the Torino Games for both Gushue and Kapp. The men's tournament began Monday morning but both skips had a first-draw bye. Draw three goes Tuesday afternoon in Pinerolo, Italy, with Gushue taking on Sweden's Peja Lindholm.
