This morning I've uploaded a new 14 and a half hour marathon of comedy over at Kenaz's Old Time Radio. This weeks feature is the "Great Gildersleeve" and "The Bickersons".
The Great Gildersleeve
You're a brii-ii-iight boy, Leroy!—Harold Peary at the height of his popularity as classic radio's Great Gildersleeve.
The Great Gildersleeve (1941-1957) was the arguable founding father of the spin-off program, as well as one of the first true situation comedies (as opposed to sketch programs) in broadcast history. Hooked around a character who had been a staple on the classic radio hit Fibber McGee and Molly, The Great Gildersleeve enjoyed its greatest period in the 1940s, when Harold Peary graduated the character from the earlier show into the sitcom and in a quartet of likeable feature films at the height of the show's popularity.
The Bickersons
The Bickersons, was an American radio comedy (1946-1951). Born on The Chase and Sanborn Hour and refined on the lesser-remembered Drene Time it stood the already-typical domestic presentation of radio and its infant offspring, television, so squarely on its head that there were those who feared the show. The show's married protagonists spent nearly all their time together in relentless verbal war, and many people believed that the show was more than merely detrimental to the nation's post-World War II health.
