Fall 2009 Tarot and Rune reading

For my 1000th post I give you my Fall 2009 Tarot and Rune reading. The question remains the same, "What does the fall have in store for me?" Once again the readings offer some interesting dichotomies. It looks like the season will be a positive step in the right direction. A new job, already looking solid, money is always tight and it looks like the "Devil" has had his card flipped for a change.

	The Celtic Cross spread is one of the most popular Tarot spreads, providing varied insight into many aspects of a complex situation and your role in it. The Cross spread is used to plot the arc of your life and the forces acting on it. It is the most popular spread, giving a very complete view of the situation. Ice Runes are most commonly used for questions about struggle, conflict, and achievement.

The left rune represents an important element of the past. Ger is one of the runes that touches on the cycles of the year, in this case the fall harvest. These cycles are eternal, which is represented in the rune by the fact that it is unchanged by reversal. Ger can represent pregnancy or other forms of fruitfulness, and is especially indicative of the cycles of providence and karma - that which has been sown is now being reaped. This rune can also represent the cycles of wealth, for crops were frequently a sign of wealth.

The middle rune represents a deciding element of the present. Berkana represents the birch tree. The birch is frequently symbolic of renewal, rebirth, birth, growth and fertility. This rune is a joyous one, representing good outcomes from ventures undertaken. It is the rune of the family and of a good household.

The top rune represents a force that works for you. Othila is the homeland. Unlike Fehu, this is the rune of immovable wealth. On a deeper level, this rune speaks to that which you inherit, be it material or genetic. Since Othila is seen reversed here, the obstacles you confront are among those things in your background that you take for granted and consider fairly stable. Problems from the "homeland", from familial inheritance, or from our own origins may be worked around, but they cannot be made to go away. Fortunately, for many problems, this is all that is required.

The bottom Rune represents a force that works against you. Raido is the rune of riding, as in a cart or as cargo. It is seen here reversed, suggesting a disruption of travel or communication. Etiological analysis of this rune has also given it interpretations of advice or justice, and of being in a position of moral correctness. Reversed, there is an indication of the lack of solid council, or the holding of a position that is not morally sound.

The right rune represents the critical element of the future, at the core of the final outcome. Ken is the rune of light and knowledge. The rune is shown reversed representing a state of darkness or ignorance. Either you are unable to obtain information that you need, or the information is being withheld from you. Pte. Jonathan Couturier died in a "useless war"

The latest Canadian soldier killed in Afghanistan apparently considered the mission useless. The brother of Pte. Jonathan Couturier has told a Quebec newspaper the young soldier thought the mission was futile. Such a strong anti-war reaction is rare from a family following the death of a soldier in Afghanistan, but totally understandable given the mounting casualty list in a war that sees no end and people uncapable to change. Liberal Sen. Colin Kenny has called it futile, dubbing it Canada's Vietnam – a comment that has drawn an angry denunciation from military brass. Even Gov. Gen. Michaëlle Jean has waded into the issue, saying Canada's mission is improving lives in Afghanistan. He died and 11 others were injured when their vehicle drove over a roadside bomb. Lieut.-Col. Joe Paul, the battle group commander, says the 23-year-old Quebec soldier died yesterday morning when his vehicle hit an IED while returning from a mission in the Panjwaii district, southwest of Kandahar city. Paul says the soldiers were clearing a village with plans to have Canadian troops living among the Afghans there to provide security. Couturier is the 131st Canadian soldier to die in Afghanistan since the mission began in 2002. Soldiers gather to say farewell Canadian soldiers in Afghanistan gathered as the sun was setting Friday to say farewell to a fallen brother in arms. Hundreds of soldiers lined the tarmac at the Kandahar Airfield as the body of Pte. Jonathan Couturier was carried in a flag-draped casket to a waiting military transport aircraft. (Sept. 18, 2009)

Patrick Lormand, a 21-year-old infantryman remembered for his dedication to duty and his sense of humour, is the 12th Canadian soldier to die during the current rotation and the 130th overall since the mission to bring peace to his war-torn land began seven years ago. Lormand was on a patrol Sunday when his vehicle struck an improvised explosive device southwest of Kandahar city. Four other soldiers riding with him received minor injuries.

A powerful roadside bomb blast hit an armoured vehicle that was part of a Canadian convoy on a road southwest of Kandahar, bringing to 129 the total number of Canadian soldiers who have died as part of the Afghan mission since it began in 2002. Killed in the explosion were 36-year-old Maj. Yannick Pepin and Cpl. Jean-Francois Drouin, 21 who were hit by the IED explosion around noon local time in the Dand district, southwest of Kandahar city on Sunday. Both men were members of the 5 Combat Engineer Regiment and were stationed in Valcartier, Que. Pepin, the highest ranking member of the Canadian military to die in combat in Afghanistan, was the commander of the last two soldiers killed as part of the mission.

Charity starts at home

Every time Hamilton gets another "flood of the century" area politicians and citizens who aren't capable of higher inteligence look for a scapegoat to blame and pay for their own ignorance.

Sam Merulla, Councilor for Ward 4 went off half cocked a week and a half ago after he received a deluge of complaints from irate home owners standing in waste water and no insurance, denied because of previous claims. Merulla, always the opportunist sent out emails to the media laced with childish obscenities aimed at anyone who dared to challenge his self professed claim of being the crusader for the poor and ignored.

Give it a rest Merulla, insurance is meant to aide those in getting their homes and lives back together after a tragedy not to compensate idiots who use the system as a honey pot for free home improvements.

I have not had more than a small amount of water come into my basement when there have been heavy rains. I live in the Sherman and Barton area, which has had many flooded basements over the past few years.

I did not need to experience a flood first- hand to know that it would be unwise to have a finished basement. My basement is used for what it was intended to be, a storage area and laundry area. The storage is on shelves and the bottom areas have everything in sealed waterproof containers. There is nothing that is irreplaceable or precious in my basement. I have basic insurance coverage and my insurance rates are very low.

I would not blame the city if I was not capable of learning after repeated flooding in my basement nor would I expect my insurance to continue to cover my losses. I am upset that these people who fail to learn from past experiences continue to have the insurance companies pay to renovate the basements of their homes. My insurance rates went up thirty bucks a month for no reason and I've never had to put in a claim.

I am supposed to feel bad that a surround sound stereo and a white couch was damaged by the flood. Why would anyone put something that valuable in a basement that has had many floods? That's like leaving it on the front lawn and then complaining it was stolen.

People claim "the city has known about this problem for many years and continued to do nothing about it," yet they continue to live in the seventies when "wreck rooms" where the norm. The problem is not going away until we get a city council who sees merit in investing in infrastructure instead of higher profile items like the Red Hill Expressway.

An Expressway that every member of City Hall including Mr. Merulla touted as something that would improve the quality of life for all citizens of Hamilton. All the expressway has done is leave Hamilton with a woeful Red Hill Creek storm barrier not capable of handling even modest amounts of rain.

The people who are the most vocal on the TV, radio or in the Spec are the most ignorant. These people deserve to have no insurance, maybe they can invite Mr. Merulla over for a beer and sit in the basement and wait for the next flood. At least each would be eye to eye with the problem and hopefully the "plagues" that besiege Hamilton will be washed away.

Destined hero's pay the ultimate sacrifice

The two soldiers were killed when their re-supply convoy was hit by two improvised explosive devices. The two soldiers had left their vehicle to secure the area after an initial explosion near the town of Senjaray, when a second IED exploded around 3:20 p.m. local time. Brig.-Gen Jonathan Vance, commander of Task Force Kandahar- The roads in Kandahar are heavily travelled by Afghans, and soldiers like Christian and Matthieu work tirelessly under extremely hazardous conditions to try and prevent restrictions to the freedom of movement of Afghans, so that they can begin to live more normal lives. The two soldiers were part of a group of engineers who clear roads of IEDs. The two likely helped defuse half of the roadside bombs found in Kandahar province in July On the day the two men died, soldiers halted operations at two bomb-making factories and seized a quantity of bomb-making equipment. The total number of Canadian soldiers killed during the Afghan mission is now at 127. Peace.

HSR procedures are totally apathetic

Ridership is down 2 per cent for the first four months of the year -- a $600,000 hit to the budget if the trend continues all year. It's the first sustained revenue drop the system has seen since 1995.-July 22, Spectator Article

"There's no doubt in my mind that it's connected to the economy,"-transit director Don Hull.

This well may be part and parcel but after a recent problem I had on a bus and the disappointing way it was handled I believe many of the HSR's problems are internal. There was a recent case to back up my assumption involving assault to which drivers have done nothing out of fear of violating HSR policy.

Spectator Article Feb. 28-The Hamilton police services board is calling for a review of the relationship between police and the HSR after a woman was pulled off a bus and beaten...When the driver stopped, the girls dragged the woman off the bus and continued to beat her. Neither the passengers nor the driver intervened.

According to current HSR procedures, drivers are to report any on-board incidents to a superior and are not specifically required to intervene.

I have personally witnessed a similar incident and blogged about which fortunately ended different because of a driver who cared to challenge "HSR procedure"

Excerpt from my post from 5/21/07- I grabbed a bus for home, and the reality of the inner city came crashing down when I witnessed an attempted mugging of a young girl by two teen female "gang bangers" at the stop at Barton and John. Thank god it was broken up by the male bus driver before anyone was hurt.

This leads me to the most recent incident of HSR apathy and disregard for commuter safety. Here is a detailed account of the incident taken from the emails sent to the HSR and several city officials.

Incident: At 12:30 I got on the Barton bus, shortly after 4 males, obviously intoxicated, entered the bus greeted the driver in a way that I felt they knew each other in some way. One male carried a 24 of beer,entered first and proceeded to crack the cap and begin to consume it. The driver entered and I assume did his regular check before departing, never said anything to this passenger. This male then proceeded to pass this beer around and then crack a second and due the same. The foursome continued to drink, unattested by the driver until they departed at the centre mall. Several passengers noticed their behaviour a couple, including my self gave strong indication of the circumstance. I mentioned to the last of the foursome before he got off that his actions just got the driver in some problems, to this the driver responded with a "so what". If this driver is not reprimanded or/and removed from this route a copy of this email will be sent to the mayors office and need be it the Hamilton Police pending your reaction. Can I remind the HSR who pays their bills? The people who pay fares to ride your buses and who expect a safe commute.

The following is a copy of the two emails that I have sent to the HSR concerning a driver I had the unfortunate pleasure of being served by back on June 23. As you read you will realize the HSR: which receives a lions share of mine, and the other thousands of commuters dollars annually to provide a sound transport system; failed me miserably, and now refuses to offer a basic rebuttal their own mandate says I am entitled too.

I have yet to hear from any of the above parties at this time about the outcome. The only ones who have shown any support where other drivers who apparently know in detail of the complaint.

Canadian troops bid farewell to Pte. Sebastien Courcy

Sébastien Courcy from 2nd Battalion, Royal 22nd Regiment A Canadian soldier fell to his death Thursday while conducting operations in the Panjwaii district of Afghanistan. Pte. Sébastien Courcy was a member of 2e Battalion, Royal 22e Regiment -- known as the Van Doos -- based at CFB Valcartier outside Quebec City. He was the fifth Canadian soldier to die in Afghanistan this month, along with at least 42 other NATO military personnel. Courcy, 26, arrived in Afghanistan in April and was part of an operation to separate the insurgency from the population in Panjwaii district. The young soldier had joined the military in 2006. This was his first deployment in Afghanistan. He is the 125th Canadian soldier to die since the Afghanistan mission began in 2002. Earlier this month, Master Cpl. Patrice Audet, 38, and Cpl. Martin Joannette, 25, were killed in a helicopter crash at an American forward operating base in Zabul province. Cpl. Nick Bulger, 30, was also killed this month when the convoy he was in struck a roadside bomb in Afghanistan's southern Zhari district. Master Cpl. Charles-Philippe Michaud, 28, died from injuries he received on June 23 when an improvised explosive device detonated near his dismounted patrol in the Panjwaii district. Corporal Nick Bulger's job was to protect the life of Canada's top commander in Afghanistan, Brigadier-General Jonathan Vance. "IEDs are the tools of cowards," Brig-Gen.Vance Brig.-Gen. Vance's armoured vehicle slipped past a powerful, buried bomb in the restive Zhari district west of Kandahar City. Cpl. Bulger's vehicle, travelling just 15 metres behind, wasn't so lucky: It triggered an explosion that killed the married father of two girls and injured five other members of Brig.-Gen. Vance's security detail. The security unit is comprised mostly of veterans. And while Cpl. Bulger - the 121st Canadian to die in Afghanistan since 2002 - was on his first tour, he'd already made an impression. A Canadian combat engineer, described as a great guy to be around, was killed in southern Afghanistan yesterday when one of two roadside bombs he was trying to defuse exploded. Corporal Martin Dube, 35, was the second Canadian soldier to die in Afghanistan in a week. In making the grim announcement at Kandahar Airfield, Brig.-General Jonathan Vance said the "energetic" Dube was someone who believed in the Afghan mission and was eager to make a difference. "The IED that Martin was dismantling could have killed an entire family, as it was deliberately aimed at passing traffic," said Vance, the senior commander in Kandahar. "His actions, his sacrifice, saved the lives of innocents." Vance praised Dube, who was from the 5e Regiment du Genie de Combat based at CFB Valcartier near Quebec City. Dube's death brings to 120 the total number of Canadian soldiers who have died during the Afghan mission since it began in 2002. A period of relative calm for Canadian soldiers trying to bring stability to Afghanistan was shattered Monday June 8 when a makeshift bomb cut short the life of an infantryman on foot patrol in the treacherous Panjwaii district of Kandahar province. Pte. Alexandre (Pelo) Peloquin, 20, of the 3e Bataillon, Royal 22e Regiment, was based at Canadian Forces Base Valcartier near Quebec City. Peloquin was from the Laurentides region north of Montreal but was living in Val Belair before he left in mid-April on his first mission to Afghanistan, said spokesman Alex Maille. He is the 12th Valcartier soldier to die in the mission. Peace.

Sojourn on Randy Steele

Did anyone in Hamilton not know and love Randy? Few people are blessed with such generosity of spirit, warmth of personality, a rich pedigree of creativity and an upbeat outlook on life that would make the biggest Grinch smile and not to mention loving family man and community crusader. It's no wonder their isn't a single person in Hamilton who wasn't personally touched or inspired by Randy's charm and genuine warm personality or moved by his works. Randy will be remembered across the city for his unfailingly warm and courageous bearing, his feisty news and local culture reporting for CHCH (including his "Steele's Town" feature).Cancer snatched away his voice before taking his life;a cruel cut; but even that couldn't silence him - he just moved another passion, his sharp, incisive photography, toward the front. We are all both richer for having known him and poorer for having lost him so soon. My heart breaks for his beautiful family, for they know and feel most keenly what he meant.

Some solace for shooting victim

For almost three years, Travis Bailey has lived with open hate for the teenager who fired a shotgun blast into the back of his head. Yesterday, he watched Thomas Riordan, 20, walk out of court in shackles to begin a 6 1/2-year prison term for attempting to murder him.

Only one hour earlier, Bailey watched as the same man who nearly killed him was sentenced to life in prison without chance for parole for 14 years for murdering a young Waterdown man later that year. Under Canadian law, both sentences run at the same time.

"I'm glad it's done. I can finally sleep easy," Bailey said. "Now I know justice has been served."

Three years ago, on May 7, 2006, Bailey was a hardworking father who'd separated from his partner. By 10 p.m., after a long day nailing shingles, Bailey had kicked off his boots and was partying with his roommates and girlfriend. He heard about a scuffle at his apartment earlier that day when someone showed up looking to collect a drug debt from a tenant and had been run off by another tenant brandishing a pool cue. When he heard someone down below on the back stairway knocking loudly, he stepped out of his apartment door and looked down and saw an angry Riordan standing there demanding to know where the guy was. Bailey told him he didn't know who the guy was.

Riordan in a paranoid rage started swearing, delusional that Bailey was hiding the guy. Riordan started to walk away, then, spun on his heel, pulled out a shotgun, cocked it and fired.

Then the life sentence for Bailey started. The blast left him blind in his right eye and paralyzed on his left side. His appearance is that of an elderly stroke survivor, 23 surgeries, endless rehabilitation has left him battling long bouts of depression, severe memory loss and seizures.

The acquired brain injury has left him with seizures, and sudden falls are a constant worry, even with his walker. But what hit him hardest was losing precious years with his young children during their most formidable years. Instead of birthday cake and trips to see Santa, Bailey's family had to endure trips to various care homes and rehabilitation centres.

Thomas Riordan

It's sad that second-degree and attempted murder only gets you 14 years in this country but that's the gift the Canadian justice system gave Thomas Riordan yesterday. The Hamilton man, now 20, was handed a life sentence with no chance of parole for 14 years for the second-degree murder of Michael Walsh, 22. His life sentence runs from the day he was arrested.

The victim, who worked as a general labourer for a local cement company, had gotten himself mixed up in a drug deal gone bad. The father of one child was beaten, stabbed and shot to death after four men kicked down the door to his room over the tavern shortly after midnight on Oct. 11, 2006.

Shane Riordan, 21, who stood watch while his brother and two other assailants inflicted deadly retribution, was sentenced to seven years in a penitentiary for manslaughter. He will have three years, two months left on his sentence after getting double credit for pretrial custody.

Court heard the slaying was instigated by a local drug dealer who had a beef with Walsh. Earlier on the night of the homicide, the drug dealer and four others, including the Riordan brothers and a 16-year-old getaway driver, met at a Park Street South residence.

Thomas Riordan took the rifle, the butt of which he sawed off to make it easier to conceal. Shane Riordan took a large knife, which allegedly was ultimately was used by another of the assailants. A youth, who cannot be identified, took a heavy candlestick. The group allegedly smoked pot and drank whisky to steel themselves for the assault on Walsh at the Waterdown tavern.

The Riordan brothers are a couple of remorseless cowards who should have gotten the full 25 years for second degree and 10 years for manslaughter. Two families are forever changed by a couple of drug addicts and a flawed justice system.

Trooper Karine Blais was killed Monday when the vehicle she was travelling in hit an improvised explosive device in Shah Wali Kowt, north of Kandahar City. Karine Blais lived life in a small town, but she had big dreams. She grew up in the Quebec riverside village of Les Méchins, and became a familiar face in the community while working in the local convenience store. She wanted to return one day to build a house there. But it was her desire to join the army, so that one day she could drive a tank and become a mechanic, that ensured she would never return to the place she loved. On Monday, the 21-year-old died in a roadside bomb explosion in Afghanistan, just two weeks into her first tour of duty there. Blais was killed while riding in an armoured vehicle in the Shah Wali Kot District north of Kandahar city. She was serving with the 2nd Battalion, Royal 22nd Regiment battle group, based at Valcartier, Que. Four other soldiers were hurt in the blast. She is the 117th Canadian soldier to die in the Afghan mission since 2002 – and the second woman – the majority of whom were killed by roadside bombs. Capt. Nichola Goddard of Calgary, who was killed in battle in May 2006, was the first woman killed in Afghanistan. After graduating from the Polyvalente de Matane high school in a nearby town, Blais went directly into the army. She was stationed at Canadian Forces Base Valcartier, near Quebec City, and has been with the forces since 2006. Peace.
