A Dogs Lunch
In many urban centres plagues of vermon have taken once respectable nebourhoods and reduced them to bleak, dirty sespools of crime, gangs, drugs and violence. This cartoon depicts the future if we start now. A stand against these "dogs of war" and turning our communities from a dogs lunch back into the cats meow.

Hamilton police service plays lets make a deal
And instead of the new car! They wound up with the pig wagon.
Two years ago, the Hamilton Police Service purchased four used 2002 Ford Crown Victoria cruisers which had previously been part of the Brantford police fleet.
Hamilton's policy at the time was to rebuild patrol cars when they reached 150,000 kilometres on the odometer. The idea was to purchase used cruisers for a reasonable amount, introduce them into the patrol car fleet and then rebuild them when necessary. They quickly realized they got taken and before the egg on their face was even dry, Hamilton Police Service scrapped the used-car experiment for good.
At the time of purchase, the four cruisers had come off a two-year lease and each car had racked up between 95,000 to 110,000 kilometres. Brantford leases all 15 of its police cruisers in two-year intervals, and the Hamilton Police Service paid about $10,000 each for four of the cars once the leases expired. But the used-car project turned out to be a dismal failure.
Two of the four cars aren't even part of the Hamilton fleet any more and the other two are no longer used as patrol cars.
One of the two remaining cars travelled just 18,000 kilometres in its first two years and cost Hamilton police $11,600 in maintenance and repair costs over that time.
That's a whopping 64 cents per kilometre in maintenance costs, not including gas.
The other remaining Brantford castoff travelled almost 48,000 kilometres in its first two years and cost Hamilton $16,500 for maintenance and repairs. That works out to 34 cents per kilometre.
Police Services says it will now only buy new. Good idea! What now? I suggest somebody down at the Police services pick up a copy of the "Lemon Car Guide" before they go shopping again.

For whom the bell tolls
The bell tolls for you Acting Hamilton Police Chief Tom Marlor. Why? Because of his incredible lack of leadership.
This year hasn't been a great one for this cities cops. Accusations of corruption and abuse of power have caused enough doubt in many peoples minds as to second guess the ability of many of those who are paid to serve and protect. This could lead to serious problems in public relations and general trust between the public and officers.
The latest incident involves a man stepping off a bus and grabbed by two cops and thrown in jail for doing nothing wrong. If I hadn't read the bi-line that read "Hamilton", I would have easily thought the story was from Beirut or Kandahar.
The man in question is Michael Dixon. A break-in occurred during the Aug. 14, 2003, blackout. Hamilton police were looking for a Caucasian suspect. Dixon is black.
Dixon begged the officers who nabbed him to check with the driver of the bus he had just exited on his way home from work in Toronto. They wouldn't. He sat in jail for almost four days; for nine months he lived under strict bail conditions. Three times, an assistant Crown attorney demanded the two arresting officers interview Dixon's alibi witnesses. That never happened. All charges were eventually dropped.
Dixon tried to file a complaint but a staff sergeant refused to give him the forms. He pursued the complaint and a police internal affairs investigation exonerated the officers. He complained to the Ontario Civilian Commission for Police Services; Peel police were ordered to investigate and concluded serious misconduct had occurred. The OCCPS ordered Hamilton police to lay charges. The two constables pleaded guilty. Their sentence was three days' lost pay. That's less time than Dixon spent in jail.
Dixon is yet another victim of shoddy police work. Another honest citizen denied his basic rights which include the right to file a complaint. And yet another incident in which an internal investigation has draped the thin blue curtain around a case in an effort to cover up and silence a complaint that would clearly point to substandard police work, and possibly racism.
If the Hamilton Police where a sports team the coach would be fired and every member of the team would be forced to go back to basics. In this case, back to the classroom for more sensitivity training and hands on training in public diversity awareness.
Simply saying I'm sorry and dismissing the claims of race bias is not enough. It's another cop out, and leaves everyone with a bad taste in their mouth. The tarnished brass face some serious ethical questions that include racial bias and shody investigating. I'm sorry, but this time the situation cannot be swept under the rug as Marlor is attempting to do.
Chief Brian Mullan must show his metal and address Dixon's complaints in a straightforward manner or risk being drowned in the flood of popular opinion that could sweep the city if he doesn't scrutinize the integrity of internal investigations and seriously consider that a police service should not investigate itself.
And he must ensure that all police officers -- whatever their rank -- are doing their jobs fully and properly. If he doesn't than he should be out of work.

Weekend of ups and downs in Canadian sports
This weekend in sports up here in Canada had more drama than an outbreak of poison ivy in a nudist camp. Mats Sundin provided the warm prickly feeling when he scored his 500th career goal in dramatic fashion. The Leaf captain netted the game-winner, in overtime, short-handed, it tied Dave Keon for second all-time in Leaf goals at 365, and it polished off a hat trick.
It looked as though it would be the Flames that would ruin the evening as they threatened on a 4-on-3 power play in overtime, but Sundin blasted a slap shot from just inside the blue-line 50 seconds into the extra period that rocketed past Vezina Trophy winner Miikka Kiprusoff. The goal ignited a raucous celebration by the 19,338 fans at Air Canada Centre.
The fans stayed on their feet and continued to shower applause on their beloved captain, an emotional moment that saw Sundin return the love by clapping in their direction after skating out as the game's first star.
Meanwhile in Hamilton the Tiger Cats played their final 2006 home game losing to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers 29-22. One more game and the end to this dismal season will finally be over. At 4-13 the Cats have bared their teeth and wade through the torcherous burn caused by way too much time spent on defense, bad coaching and silly mistakes that made them look like a bunch of amateurs.
The loss was bitter sweet as Cat fans said goodbye to their number one cheerleader, Pigskin Pete. As I mentioned yesterday the affectionate man in the bowler hat said his goodbyes after 31 years. Paul Weiler will be missed and his heir will have a big hat to fill.
And if the stinging wasn't bad enough, in Edmonton, fans watched in shock as the Esks lossed to Toronto 28-25. The loss gave the iron horse of the CFL a record of 5-11 placing them out of the playoffs for the first time in 34 years.
The steak was the longest run of consecutive playoff appearances in North American professional sports.
The good thing is a new week is about to start which means a whole new week of oohs, ahs and ouches. Good luck to all you poolies. Go leafs go!

Thanks for the memories, Pigskin
After 330 Games, and 20,000 chants Pete Calls It a Day.
Paul Weiler, 72 years young, approaches the Tiger-Cats' last home game of the season today. After 31 seasons, he'll be hanging up his bowler hat and retiring as Pigskin Pete, the tireless cheerleader who, through good times and bad, has led fans through the familiar chant:
Oskie wee wee!
Oskie wa wa!
Holy mackinaw!
Tigers! Eat 'em raw!
He will help the Tiger-Cats select his successor before the 2007 season. The team plans to honour his service on the field today. It will a sad day in the Hammer as we say good-bye to some one who brought such class to the city and never asked for anything in return.
THE HISTORY OF 'PIGSKIN PETE'

Weiler comes from a big family. One of six kids, he is also a father of two, and grandfather of five, so it's not surprising that he has 60 relatives and friends coming to todays game. The Tiger-Cats are hosting them all under two tents in the west end zone. Many are coming from Montreal, where Weiler grew up as an Alouettes fan, and where he drove a city bus until a fateful visit to Hamilton in 1964 made him contemplate a move here.
When word of a job offer from Dofasco came through, he pulled his bus over at noon, rounded up June and the kids in the family Volkswagen and headed to Hamilton for good.
Here, he continued his admiration for the Alouettes, for a little while at least. He and June were great fans of football in general and became regulars at the Quarterback Club, then a thriving hub of football activity in the glory days of the Tiger-Cats and of Hamilton itself. The ballroom at the Royal Connaught Hotel would be jammed for every meeting, and Weiler's allegiance began to shift.
Pigskin Pete II retired after the 1975 season. That was Bill Wirtz, who had taken over the job from his father, Vince Wirtz, in 1967. Vince had been doing it since the '20s.
Before the 1976 season, June Weiler was doing some secretarial work for the Quarterback Club, and team president Ralph Sazio approached Paul about taking over the job, hoping to avoid a public process that was sure to make Sazio "one friend and a thousand enemies," as Weiler puts it.
And so began the career of Pigskin Pete III.
He used to get paid for the gig -- $25 a game under Michael DeGroote's ownership, $40 under Harold Ballard's. David Braley, Weiler remembers, gave him a ticket and a parking spot. In 1993, when the team failed to furnish him with a ticket to a game, he stayed away in protest.
The strike lasted one game, before public pressure led team president John Michaluk not only to invite him back, but to send a limo to his house and drive him right on to the field.
I remember that time and it had to be the only time this mild mannered gentlemen got truly angry, for the right reason. I'm sure there's still poop stains on the ceiling of Michaluk's old office.
Today, the team gives him a pair of season tickets and he pays for another pair, giving the extra seats to family and friends.
THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES
Through sickness and health, and every kind of weather, he has never missed a single game beyond the strike game.
On Weiler's watch, the Tiger-Cats reached the highs of two Grey Cup victories (1986 and 1999), and the lows of the team's worst records ever: 1997, when the Cats lost all but two games, and 2003, when the team produced only one win.
Weiler had actually planned to retire last year after completing his 30th season, but with the team's 5-13 record, he decided he would wait a year and go out on a high note.
With the Cats' acquisition of several high-profile players, including quarterback Jason Maas, receiver Terry Vaughn and running back Josh Ranek, it looked like this would be a turnaround year. Instead, the Cats stumbled out of the gate, opening the season with four straight losses. Going into today's game, the team is out of playoff contention with a pitiful 3-12 record.
Next year, he'll be back on the field to pass his bucket-sized bowler -- size 7 and seven-eighths -- to his successor, and take his seat in Box A, as Paul Weiler, ordinary fan.
I hope the CFL honours him with a special induction into the Hall of Fame, got knows he's contributed to the growth of the Canadian game as much or more than any player, owner or builder has.
Pigskin will be missed.

Friday the 13th
Although most of us would probably affirm that superstition's role in Western culture is now a much diminished one, more a source of amusement than anything else, there are still those who allow their trepidation over particular days or dates to prevent them from engaging in their choice of activities. We may make jokes about Friday the 13th and only kiddingly instruct loved ones to exercise greater care on that day, but those who suffer from a fear of the number thirteen (triskaidekaphobia) or a fear of Friday the 13th (paraskevidekatriaphobia) may genuinely feel limited by the rumored potential for ill luck connected with the date.
The reasons why Friday came to be regarded as a day of bad luck have been obscured by the mists of time — some of the more common theories link it to a significant event in Christian tradition said to have taken place on Friday, such as the Crucifixion, Eve's offering the apple to Adam in the Garden of Eden, the beginning of the Great Flood, or the confusion at the Tower of Babel. Chaucer alluded to Friday as a day on which bad things seemed to happen in the Canterbury Tales as far back as the late 14th century ("And on a Friday fell all this mischance"), but references to Friday as a day connected with ill luck generally start to show up in Western literature around the mid-17th century:
"Now Friday came, you old wives say, Of all the week's the unluckiest day." (1656)
From the early 19th century onward, examples abound of Friday's being considered a bad day for all sorts of ordinary tasks, from writing letters to conducting business and receiving medical treatment:
"I knew another poor woman, who lost half her time in waiting for lucky days, and made it a rule never to . . . write a letter on business . . . on a Friday — so her business was never done, and her fortune suffered accordingly." (1804)
"There are still a few respectable tradesmen and merchants who will not transact business, or be bled, or take physic, on a Friday, because it is an unlucky day." (1831)
Friday was also said to be a particularly unlucky day on which to undertake anything that represented a beginning or the start of a new venture, thus we find references to all of the following activities as endeavors best avoided on Fridays:
Beginning a journey: "I knew another poor woman, who . . . made it a rule never to . . . set out on a journey on a Friday." (1804)
Giving birth: "A child born on a Friday is doomed to misfortune." (1846)

Hamilton Business Pioneer:Sam Netkin
My father worked for this man back in the 1950's at the Netkin family produce company that was located on the lot that is now Hamiltons Jackson Square. My father was 15 at the time and started out hooking up the horses to their delivery carts. A few years later he began driving for them. The Route Canada Saga

The main character's the Fingold brothers a couple of devious business men who manage to buy a government owned trucking company in a suspicious deal. Corruption is the rule of the empire for 20 months until the kings of deceit are finally toppled. In the end thousands of employees face a mountain of red tape as they try to save their pensions and find new work. My father was one those victims who managed to find work with another trucking company and eventually received all of his pension money, others where not so lucky. Talk about getting no respect!
It's been a tough few weeks for the guy inside the Hamilton Tiger Cat mascot outfit.
First, his football team spends the season losing ugly. Then he gets laid off from his job at the Ford plant in Oakville. And last week he gets the kicker to the whole package when he's robbed of his rent money while performing at the Canadian Football Hall of Fame induction ceremony at City Hall.
During the 90-minute function, his wallet was in his pants in an office at the hall of fame. When he returned, he noticed his credit cards had been rearranged and the cash was gone.
It's an especially cruel kick in the butt for a guy -- he's not allowed to make his name public -- who does more than 200 appearances a year to promote the team and the city. He drives all over the place, dances around in his microwave-hot costume as often as three times in a day, washes it constantly to keep it from stinking, and gives up much of his free time to the cause for just a few bucks and some gift certificates from the team.
All because he likes the reaction he gets from kids who light up when they see him. Nice way to get thanked.

Hamilton teased and left unsatisfied, again
Jim Balsillie, co-chief executive officer of BlackBerry manufacturer Research in Motion in Waterloo has bought the Pittsburgh Penguins and immediately the rumour mill began cranking out their fantasy stories of an NHL team coming to Hamilton.
Yes Balsillie's group has exclusive rights to bring an NHL team to Copps Coliseum but has gone on record as stating that he will keep the team in Pittsburgh and has no intention of bringing it to Hamilton.
But that hasn't stopped delusional city councilor's the likes of Ward 8 Hamilton Councilor Terry Whitehead, the city's point man for Copps Coliseum, saying "We are a heck of a lot closer to having an NHL team in Hamilton than we were"
Then we were when? When the Copps was first built back in the '80's. Flashback time. Hamilton hockey nuts where toyed with and goaded in believing Pittsburgh or Buffalo was coming to Steeltown then.
Lets face facts unless something disastrous happens with a purposed casino deal in Pittsburgh, which will see a new arena built their, Hamilton will have to settle for Montreal AHL affiliate(The Bulldogs) that will be more enjoyable and more affordable to watch than Pittsburgh will be. Embalmer charged with bodysnatching
If you are eating while reading this, I would suggest setting it aside. I found this story in yesterdays paper about an embalmer who's character was straight out of a Edgar Allan Poe short story.
A former funeral parlour owner and embalmer accused in a plot to plunder corpses for profit admitted to investigators last year that he and his partner rarely got permission to take body parts for transplants, according to court documents.
The papers detail a long statement given by Joseph Nicelli before he was charged in a plot to secretly remove skin, bone and other parts from hundreds of bodies from funeral homes in New York City, Rochester, New York, Philadelphia and New Jersey.
Nicelli implicated Michael Mastromarino, a former oral surgeon, as the mastermind of a scheme that made millions of dollars by selling the stolen tissue to biomedical companies that supply material for procedures including dental implants and hip replacements.
It is believed the tissue was sold to legitimate suppliers who distributed it around the world, including to eight provinces in Canada. Health Canada has said no patients who received the tissue have tested positive for any disease as a result.
During a failed bid in 2005 to head off his arrest, Nicelli said that after collecting bodies for embalming or cremation, he would divert them to Mastromarino to carve up without families' permission, a police report said.
Nicelli, 50, "stated maybe he spoke with two families about a possible donation, but all other extractions were done without consent," the report said.
He further claimed he overheard Mastromarino describing how on paperwork he "would change a donor's criteria such as age," the report added. "He would make them younger, which would be more attractive to the companies accepting the tissue."
Mastromarino also changed times of death to make the parts appear fresher and extracted them from cancer victims without telling the tissue banks, some of which consider the disease a disqualifying condition, Nicelli told investigators, according to the report.
Nicelli said that when he questioned the doctored paperwork, Mastromarino told him, "Don't worry about it."
Among the looted bodies was that of Masterpiece Theatre host Alistair Cooke, who died in 2004. His age was recorded as 85 rather than 95 and the cause of death was listed as heart attack instead of lung cancer that had spread to his bones.
Part of Nicelli's job was to restore bodies so that grieving families wouldn't notice bones had been removed, he said. In one instance, a daughter complained that her father looked shorter in the coffin.
Mastromarino has denied any wrongdoing, saying it was the funeral directors' role, not his, to obtain consent and medical histories of the dead and he took their word that the bodies were suitable for harvesting.
Mastromarino, owner of Biomedical Tissue Services of Fort Lee, New Jersey; Nicelli; and two so-called "cutters" were charged in February with body stealing, unlawful dissection and forgery. All pleaded not guilty before being released on bail.

Law & Order episode inspired by Gibson rant
Mixing police procedural and legal drama, Law & Order has often featured plots "ripped from the headlines" during its 17 seasons.
Examples include an episode broadcast a year after the death of Princess Diana, in which a woman is killed in a car accident after being pursued by a gossip reporter, and several others based on killers Paul Bernardo and Karla Homolka.
The writers have once again taken a page from real life, with an upcoming episode that recalls actor-director Mel Gibson's recent drunk driving arrest and subsequent anti-Semitic tirade.
This week, the filmed-in-New York show has been shooting scenes for an episode entitled In Vino Veritas. This instalment of the hit show features comedian Chevy Chase depicting a TV actor who gets pulled over by police on suspicion of drunk driving and unleashes an anti-Semitic rant on the arresting officers.
However, the episode then veers dramatically away from reality as Chase's character is discovered to have blood on his shirt. Forensic scientists determine the blood to have come from the producer of the character's failed TV sitcom — a woman who happens to be Jewish.
The episode is set to air Nov. 3.

Nine months for years of sadness
Nine months is the punishment for the desecration and toppling of more than 230 gravestones at historic Hamilton Cemetery in June. This is ridiculous and a slap in the face too the families who's memories of their departed loved ones have been besmirched.
A frustrated Ontario Court Justice Norman Bennett echoed popular opinion when he said the crime "verged on being considered evil." But added, yesterday that he was "shackled" by the Youth Criminal Justice Act in how severely he could sentence the first of five teenagers to face trial for the vandalism totaling more than $36,000. Still, the youth was told he must pay the cemetery, operated by the city, $36,000, and he was sentenced to nine months in custody.
The teenager was 17 years old the night of the York Boulevard cemetery rampage and cannot be named because the Youth Offender act protects scum who are disrespectful to a society that gives them everything, in return, asks nothing of them. Instead of being part of society these self professed misfits, think its "something to do" to go out and perform these malicious and destructive acts.
I have to love defense lawyer Stephen De Wetter; who is probably being payed from public coffers; when he argued it was a despicable act but the youth had been caught up in the devil's night mindset of June 6, 2006, a date that matches the 666 that is the biblical sign of the beast.
Judge Bennett must have been choking back the giggles at such a lame defense, as he said it was "absolutely shocking" that the youths had the "audacity" to topple gravestones and bring "sad moments" to the lives of those with loved ones in the cemetery.
Some of the headstones were destroyed forever because the misfits also moved the lids of vaults to get at coffins. The vandalism was already beyond anyone's comprehension but the youths were not content and had then gone across York Boulevard and tried to break into Dundurn Castle, but where scared off by a security guard.
"You are a youth absolutely out of control ... This community has to be protected somehow." Was the last tough words from the judge, but in the end his actions failed the community that he protects.
The youth has already been in custody for three months and will be credited for four and one-half months served while completing his sentence in the Peninsula Youth Centre and in a group home. The judge also placed him on 12 months probation with various provisions, including anger management.
I hope the judges who handle the remaining cases show more incentive and find ways to make these degenerates pay for their crime. In many jurisdictions in other civilized countries these punks would be looking at a good year in tough youth jail.

Gill walked up to Dawson College in Montreal around 12:45pm clad in black and carrying three weapons, including a semi-automatic, a handgun and a shotgun. He opened fire outside the college, then entered the canteen when it was crowded with students and staff.
He murdered one women in cold blood and wounded 19 others in his 30 minute gun rampage before being killed in a shootout with police. Six people remain critically ill following the attack. Gill had a blog on a website devoted to the Goth sub-culture. His blog contains a photo gallery of more than 50 pictures showing the young man in a variety of poses with different guns and wearing a long black trench coat. "His name is Trench," he wrote in his profile. "You will come to know him as the Angel of Death." Dawson College is a junior college in central Montreal and has about 10,000 students some as young as 16-17. I watched intently as Canadian television broadcast live pictures of the scene showing police and emergency vehicles on the streets and crowds of frightened students fleeing the college's buildings. Six of the victims are in a critical condition in the intensive care unit of Montreal General Hospital. They are recovering from surgery after suffering gunshot wounds to the head and stomach. Some of the gunman's victims have multiple wounds. Others were only shot once. Police arrived at the scene in three minutes because some officers were already at the college on an unrelated call. Their quick action saved lives. A new technique was used; instead of establishing a perimeter around the place and waiting for the SWAT team, the first officers went right inside. Police have ruled out terrorism or racism as a motive. They say Gill had fired randomly at no particular target until police arrived when he began aiming at them. Gill was obviously a disturbed lonely man, one who listed a movie about "Columbine" as an inspiration. Kimveer Gill His blog includes a photo of a tombstone with his name printed on it - below it the phrase: "Lived fast died young. Left a mangled corpse." He wrote on his vampirefreaks.com profile. "He is not a people person. He has met a handfull (sic) of people in his life who are decent." But he writes that he finds the vast majority to be "worthless, no good, kniving, betraying lieing (sic), deceptive." The last of Gill's six journal entries Wednesday was posted at 10:41 a.m, about two hours before the gunmen was shot dead after the college shooting. In the latest one, Gill extols the virtues of a morning quaff of whisky. Other posts Wednesday deal with topics as mundane as dry contact lenses, purple freezies, and eating eggs and toast for breakfast. The blog's prominent photo shows a close up of Gill curled into the fetal position, his intense brown eyes peering into the camera from between his bent knees. "Rock and Roll baby!" reads the caption below another photo, tongue outstretched, holding up a black semi-automatic weapon with one hand and making the sign of the devil with another. "I think I have an obbsetion (sic) with guns . . . muahahaha," is the inscription below another picture of Gill aiming the barrel of the gun at the camera. "Anger and hatred simmers within me," said another caption below a head shot of Gill grimacing. The site also has lengthly lists of likes and dislikes. On the "likes" list are: first-person-shooter video games, "Super Psycho Maniacs roaming the streets freely," massacres, trenchcoats, destruction and "crushing my enemies skulls." He also shows a penchant for semi-automatic handguns, combat shotguns, sawed-off shotguns, assault rifles and myriad other weapons. He dislikes: "The world and everything in it." "But to be more specific," he continues, he hates jocks, preps, country music, Hip Hop, "all those who oppose my rule." Gill seems to harbour particular disdain for authority, including police, "all the government on Earth," "bible-thumping know-it-alls" and God. Gills list of favourite music groups is a who's who of heavy metal: Ozzy Osbourne, Marilyn Manson, Iron Maiden, Danzig and Metallica, but only the "old stuff." His favourite movies list includes mostly gory horror films. He enjoys violent video games including the controversial "Postal," a first-person shooter game, in which the protagonist goes on a killing spree while completing everyday errands. A questionnaire on the blog reveals both banal and disturbing insights into Gill's life. He likes drinking, owns 300 CDs, prefers Burger King over MacDonalds and says "heavy metal rules." He writes that he is 6-foot-1, was born in Montreal and is of Indian heritage. His weakness is laziness and he fears nothing. A goal he'd like to achieve by the end of the year is to stay alive. However, responding to the question, "How do you want to die?" Gill replied "like Romeo and Juliet - or in a hail of gunfire." (He got his wish). The shooting spree has revived painful memories of the December 6, 1989 attack at Montreal's Ecole Polytechnique, when Marc Lepine shot and killed 14 young women before turning the gun on himself. As well as the April 28, 1999 copycat attach by a 14-year-old boy, which kills one student, wounds one other at a high school in Taber, Alberta - eight days after Columbine massacre. Gun laws were tightened after that massacre but the current Harper government has plans to roll them back in part. Lets hope this changes his mind. Flags everywhere in Canada fly at half mass, peace to those who have to suffer for the sins one one darl soul. *Update 6:04pm Contrary to first reports from the Montrael Police the bullet that killed Gill was in fact self inflicted according to the autopsy report. It looks the coward didn't get his wish after all. I wonder what the devil thinks about suicide. *Apparently Gill used three legally registered guns in the attack including a new gun on the market a "Beretta Storm". Basically a hand gun with a longer stock only able to fire low power, small caliber rounds. Later, Kenaz Saturday, September 09, 2006Saying Goodbye to a Hamilton Hero Private Mark Graham, 33, was killed in Afghanistan by an American pilot who fired on Canadian troops by mistake six days ago. His dad Albert spoke for many Canadians who are left wondering, "Why does it keep happening? It happened before, it happened now, and I'm sure it will happen again if they don't communicate properly ... Don't guess. Don't hope you have it right." As a pacifist I find it hard to find the right balance between pride in our countries military achievements as leaders in many overseas missions and outright anger to know that lives are being taken away by military blunders. Like the elder Graham, I believe in peace. This type of intervention never works. When will the western world realize we can clean up two thousand years worth of hate and distrust in a year. When will our government wake up and leave the region until such time the "Peace" can be kept. That is Canada's role and Graham and his fellow soldiers did it well. This frustrating situation will make even the most disciplined pacifist mad as hell. Graham was a world-class runner who competed for Canada at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona, then moved to the U.S. after first being recruited by the University of Nebraska, then moving to Kent State University. At the 1994 Commonwealth Games in Victoria, B.C., Graham was stunned when he was invited to lunch with Queen Elizabeth. His dad told him to be a gentleman, so he sang O Canada for the Queen before becoming so flustered he forgot the words and fellow Canadians came to his rescue by joining in. When injuries ended his running career, Graham returned to Hamilton and joined the military in 2004. Graham was very excited when word came he would head to Afghanistan with his 1st Battalion of the Royal Canadian Regiment at the beginning of August. The Canadian troops were sent into Afghanistan's Panjwaii district in Operation Medusa, a major anti-Taliban operation west of Kandahar.
